Since 2008, we have undertaken preliminary, intermediate and main phase ground investigations for EDF Energy at Hinkley Point in Somerset and for Horizon Nuclear Power at Wylfa Newyyd on Anglesey. The contract value of these contracts ranged from £100,000 to £8 million. Our investigations for the nuclear sector include both factual and interpretive reports. The opportunities provided by these high-profile contracts have enabled us to develop in technical areas, quality and reporting standards. Furthermore, the sensitive nature of working on nuclear sites has increased our health and safety appreciation, leading to major investments in health and safety standards. Working with our sister company RSK Radiological, we were the first UK ground investigation contractor to embrace and roll out behavioural safety training to all employees and specialist subcontractors employed on our nuclear sites.
In recognition for our work at Wylfa Newyyd, we were:
- highly commended for our intermediate onshore ground investigation in 2012
- awarded Ground Investigation Project of the Year in 2015 for a detailed onshore ground investigation
- awarded Ground Investigation Project with a Geotechnical Value of over £500,000 in 2017 for the south site onshore ground investigation
Undertaking specialist and complex contracts has also enabled us to expand our array of in-house in situ and laboratory testing, resulting in a specialist and comprehensive in-house geotechnical testing laboratory. Our project experience has helped to develop and build close relationships with specialist subcontractors, and we can now undertake any testing or exploration methodology that is required. We have worked closely with international partners to deliver bespoke technical specifications to our international client base.
