Yesterday evening Wesley Dixon from Structural Soils Bristol office competed in the Western Regional heat of the Geological Societies Early Careers Award. The award is aimed at young professionals (under the age of 30) who are starting off on their Geological careers.
Wesley was up against incredibly strong competition from geologists from Atkins and EDF. Wesley’s talk centred around the use of electronic tablets and optical televiewers as logging aids during the Wylfa Ground investigations. Wesley adeptly explained the many benefits of using digital technology to control the consistency and accuracy of multiple loggers - enabling the cm accurate detailed and consistent logging of multiple Km of intensely folded and foliated Phyllites and Psammites. He followed this up with a graphic demonstration of the power of the optical televiewer when reviewing logs and cross checking depths, geological structures and features between the optical logs, photographs of the core once drilled - and actually engineering logs.
I am pleased to say that the panel of Judges, which included Bill Gaskarth – Chartership officer of the Geological Society, voted in in favour of Wesley – and he will go on to represent the Western Region in the national finals which are held at Burlington House in London. Wesley is the now proud custodian of a real plastic gold trophy, which we hope will adorn his new logging facility near stoke – as well as the recipient of a cheque for £150.00.
I hope you will all join with me in congratulating Wesley and wishing him the best of luck in the Finals.
