RSK Environment will go head-to-head with Structural Soils for the Award for Technical Excellence, as they are also shortlisted in this category.
In the Award for Technical Excellence, Structural Soils’ inclined packer testing using the Goebore S System earned a place in the final, while it was RSK’s real-time data collection and interrogation using tablets and geographic information system (GIS) software that impressed the judges.
“The software comprises an app that enables us to record information and take photos in the field,” explains RSK geosciences’ principal consultant Neil Coyne. “It can also be customised to provide different layers of information dependent on the type of data that is required to be viewed and interrogated. This data can then be combined with other surveys, such as multi-beam sonar, geophysical surveys and drone surveys, maps and photos to provide a ‘story board’ of the project and showcase a different way of displaying the data collected.”
Structural Soils’ shortlistings in the Ground Investigation Project of the Year are both joint entries, the first with HS2 for the HS2 Central Package Area D, and the second with Mott Macdonald and National Grid for the Pentir 400kV cable section at the Wylfa Newydd Nuclear Power Station. The latter has also been shortlisted in the UK Project with a Geotechnical Value of between £1M and £3M category.
Finally, Structural Soils is just a step away from being named overall Ground Investigation Specialist of the Year for its work over the last year.
A record number of companies entered the awards this year.
“This year’s shortlist is a true showcase of the range and breadth of the projects undertaken by our industry each year,” commented Ground Engineering editor Claire Smith. “The standard of the work demonstrated in the entries is outstanding and getting onto the shortlist is an achievement in itself.”
The teams responsible for each entry will present their case to esteemed judges at the Ground Engineering office in London, UK, in April.
The winners will be announced on 6 June 2018 at a ceremony at the Hilton Park Lane, London, where over 800 members of the industry elite will come together for an event filled with entertainment, celebration and networking.
