Structural Soils has an on-going schedule of employee training including mandatory Environmental, Quality and Health & Safety courses as well as continuous professional development “brown bag” lunchtime talks. Alison Randall (Associate Director for SHEQ) approached Paula and the EHS team about organising this course as part of the Structural Soils’ training regime at the Bristol office.
Paula explains, “The course aims to provide an overview of the potential environmental impacts from a spill incident. That doesn’t just mean hydrocarbon-based chemicals; it looks beyond the more common fuel and lubricants to things like antifreeze and battery acid. We look at the environmental impact of spills and give a brief overview of the current related legislation and if spills could potentially result in fines or prosecutions for businesses. We consider best practice such as The Environment Agency’s pollution prevention guidance note, which is supported by Natural Resources Wales and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.”
The EHS team is planning to deliver the spills training to several more RSK and Structural Soils teams over the next year.
